Essay #1: Sucka!

4 pages, MLA style, double-spaced

Background

Pay attention or you might get duped! We live in a world of half- truths and fictions that look like facts.

There are plenty of deceivers out there--scammers, identity thieves, cheats, commercial interests, and others--who actively and intentionally wish to deceive us.  Yet, too often, we are easy targets for their deceptive practices, for we accept their misleading or just plain false information simply because we want it to be true. With urban legends, unscrupulous marketing, scams, governmental propaganda, and the superstitions and baseless assumptions we grow up with, we cannot help being, from time to time and to one degree or another, suckers. At some point in our lives weÕve all been duped, learning (or not!) the hard way that all is not as it seems, leaving us looking like fools or suffering even worse consequences for trusting in that which should not be trusted.
Your Assignment
Write a 4-page essay in which you analyze several instances from your life in which you have you been duped, scammed, suckered, cheated, made the fool of, or shown to be gullible in order to understand  why you fell for what seemed (or seems, if you only now are recognizing how you are being deceived) true at the time but which turned out to be false.

1.  Who is my audience and how can I make my ideas clear and convincing to it?
2. What is my thesis and is it the best answer I have to the question?
3.  Why did I choose each of the examples I will develop in the essay?
Are my paragraphs PIE?

  • Use the assigned readings to help you explain your own situations, quoting from theme either to support or to contrast with you own ideas.
  • Use the first person "I" and avoid the second person "you"
  • Really go into depth; look beyond easy explanations.
